Giraud Meplat Kit for Power Trimmer

Now available, meplat trimmer conversion kits!

Giraud Meplat Kit - cutting head and projectile holder for uniforming meplat surface of hollow point match bullets.

The Giraud Meplat Kit is designed to allow the user of a Giraud Power Case Trimmer Trimmer to uniform the very tip of hollow point match rifle bullets.  The results of this process is best described as an effort to keep velocity loss of a group of bullets as consistent as possible from muzzle to target.

All dedicated rifle shooters strive for consistent performance of their ammunition by weighing and sorting cases, deburring flash holes, uniforming primer pockets, chamfering the case mouths, weighing individual powder charges, etc.   These tasks are an effort to get the best possible uniform consistent performance of the ammo.  Advanced reloaders will then test the results by measuring the performance with a chronograph and further refining to get the lowest extreme spread and standard deviation possible.  But these numbers are typically measured only at a distance of 10 feet from the muzzle of rifle.  The targets are typically much farther downrange and sometimes tell a different story.

Meplat trimming is an effort to reduce the small variations in a bullet jacket tip that can lead to differences in velocity loss over extended distances.  If each of the bullets in a group of shots loses velocity at a different rate, each has the potential for a different point of impact on the target.  Meplat trimmed projectiles have a more consistent velocity loss rate from the first bullet to the last, resulting in less potential deviation at the target downrange.  Typically there is a small loss of ballistic coefficient compared to an unmodified bullet.  Based on what other much better shooters have stated, the loss will be less than a 1/2MOA change in elevation and windage, and more probably 1/4MOA.

Construction

The meplat trimmer cutter head is constructed of 303 stainless to fit the trimmer units and holds a carbide cutting blade that will work with all available calibers.

The projectile holders are constructed of 303 stainless and Delrin polymer.  The outer body is threaded for installation and adjustment like the case holders for the trimmer unit.  The inner body is spring loaded and contacts the bullet ogive to support the projectile during the trimming process.  The Delrin material will not mar the jacket or disturb any applied coatings.  It is sized to handle either loose projectiles or loaded ammunition.

Proper size is the smallest amount that will cut a full uniform circle across the entire tip.
